Resources and News Bell Scholarship Program
June 3, 2019
Since 2012, Interwest has supported and organized the Bell Scholarship Program, issuing scholarships to high-achieving individuals from low-income families in the City of Bell, many of whom are the first generation in their families to seek higher education.
In this time, we have distributed more than $135,000 in scholarship funding to 78 Bell High School recipients. Scholarship recipients are high-achieving individuals from low-income families, many new to the United States, who do not have the resources to support their child’s aspirations of furthering their education. Interwest funds the scholarships along with donations from local businesses and granting organizations like the Parent’s Alliance and IME BECAS. Our staff also sponsors and organizes a dinner and awards ceremony to distribute the scholarships to recipients. Their students and their families enjoy a delicious dinner and are congratulated and encouraged by city officials and sponsors, including the Mayor of Bell and representatives from the Mexican Consulate in Los Angeles.
In the last year, recipients have used their scholarships to attend colleges including UCLA, UCSB, UC Berkeley, UC Riverside, Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Northridge, Cal State Los Angeles, Cal State Dominguez Hills, and Cal State Fullerton. Recipients have also gone on to seek internships with the City of Bell as aspiring engineers and civil servants.
